Earth Hour symbolized as the time given by the people to investigate the circumstances of this earth. Earth Hour is a WWF campaign, the largest conservation organization in the world in the form of a global initiative to invite individuals, communities, businesses and government practitioners throughout the world to participate turn off lights and appliances that are not used for 1 hour on the last Saturday of each day The third week of March each year.
The main objective of this campaign is to encourage the public to make lifestyle changes that are simple and inexpensive energy efficient because the human dependence on electricity continues to increase over time, while most of the power plant fossil fuel (oil, coal, and gas nature) that produce greenhouse gases trigger global warming.
Now global warming has resulted in the rapid melting of the polar ice, triggering rising sea levels so do not be surprised if it feels deeper and deeper inland. In addition, global warming has also become one of the trigger fires, coral bleaching, climate change and increase the potential extinction of biodiversity especially those living in the tropics.
Earth Hour campaign originated from the collaboration between WWF - Australia, Fairfax Media, and Leo Burnet to reduce greenhouse gases in Sydney, Australia as much as 5% in 2007. This collaboration began in 2004, when the WWF Australia held a meeting with an advertising agency , Leo Burnet to discuss solutions to tackle climate change are getting worse and how to involve the citizens of Australia in the campaign on climate change.
In 2005, they developed a concept called "The Big Flick". This is the forerunner of the concept of Earth Hour. In 2006, this concept was applied to the Fairfax media that support these activities. Finally, the first Earth Hour was held on March 31, 2007.
After that, in March next year Earth Hour continues to be implemented to date. This is the record of implementation of Earth Hour from year to year.
Earth Hour 2007 (March 31, 2007)
Earth Hour 2008 (March 29, 2008)
Earth Hour 2009 (March 28, 2009)
Earth Hour 2010 (March 27, 2010)
Earth Hour 2011 (March 26, 2011)
Earth Hour 2012 (March 31, 2012)
Earth Hour 2013 (March 23, 2013)
Earth Hour 2014 (March 29, 2014)
Earth Hour 2015 (March 28. 2015)
There are many things in fact, is not limited to the Earth Hour alone but you can participate in Earth Hour with memandamkan lights and electronic equipment that you do not use on March 23, 2013 20:30 until 21:30 (local time), just 60 minutes anyway (can more if you want). But the action of savings not only on that date, if now you want to apply the concept of energy saving, why not? Other environmentally conscious action campaigned by Earth Hour is saving plastic waste, bring their own drink bottle, take public transportation, refuse Styrofoam, and a variety of other actions.
Earth Hour was held on Saturday so as not to disrupt the activities of colleagues on a weekday, did not funny turn the lights on in the office when the days are busy. Anyway Saturday is usually used as a day to rest and gather with family so each family member can also participate in this saving action. (Read: This fun with the family when a power outage)
Then why at the end of March? Because at the end of March the majority of countries around the world to experience the change of seasons so that the temperature is quite comfortable if cooling or heating is turned off momentarily during Earth Hour. Nothing is cold and no heat :) Another reason chose the end of March again because most countries around the world are already quite dark at around 20:30 to 21:30 so that the effect of the lights when Earth Hour is more pronounced, different if done on mid-year that certain countries are still bright at 8 pm, dark effect is not felt :)
Someone must ask ya, actually what the 60+ logo used by Earth Hour? The logo was originally just a number 60 symbolizes the patterned earth tablets 60 minutes of time spent participating in Earth Hour, but since 2011 the logo gets an additional sign "+" (plus). The plus sign as a symbol that the savings are not only carried out for an hour, but after that we can take action to additional savings. The word magic behind the 60+ numbers is "After one hour, make lifestyle"
